Tarakund Lake in Pauri Garhwal

Tarakund Lake, also known locally as Kunda Danda, is not a place I discovered through travel blogs or social media. I visited it on foot, starting from my own village, Koti, following the old village trails that locals have used for years. This journey made me understand why Tarakund Mahadev and this lake hold such deep importance for the people of this region.

My Walking Route from Village Koti to Tarakund

I started my journey from the village of Koti, walking through traditional village paths:

Koti → Pailar → Darmoli → Palli → Tarakund

This entire route is on foot, and that is what makes the experience special. Along the way, you walk through dense Banj (oak) forests, open ridges, and quiet mountain stretches where you can see far-off hills and valleys. During my visit, I was told by locals that Kunda Danda Lake looks even more beautiful in winter. In December and January, this area receives snowfall, which completely transforms the landscape. The forests, walking trails, and surroundings get covered in a white layer, adding a special charm to Tarkund Lake.

Snowfall during these months makes the place quiet and magical. If you enjoy cold weather, snow views, and peaceful surroundings, December and January are also good months to visit Kunda Danda, provided you are prepared for the cold and changing weather.

Because Tarakund is surrounded by forests and open natural spaces, it is also a good location for trekking and camping. The walking route from village Koti itself feels like a natural trek, passing through oak forests and mountain ridges.

Camping near Tarakund (with proper care and permission from locals) allows you to experience:

However, camping should be done responsibly, as this is a sacred and forested area.
